Creative Education: What is the National Goal of... →
creative-education:
This is the ONLY question that needs to be answered! In the nineteenth century, when the National Goal was for students to master the 3Rs to fit into the “modern” world, Educators produced the One Room Schoolhouse. At the beginning of the twentieth century, when the National Goal was to…

A proposal to phase out the $1 bill and replace it with a $1 coin could be gaining currency as the “supercommittee” looks to find ways to save the government money.
Now that’s CHANGE we can believe in! Zing! Conan, you need any writers?
In all seriousness, this seems like a largely reasonable proposal that, like all reasonable proposals, has a...

I’m not one who cares much for politics, but I firmly believe that we need an overhaul in the way we do education. And it’s not because our international test scores in reading, science and math are not even in the top 12 in the world.
It’s the reason why those scores are so low - school is…

Can someone explain to me the big deal with...
Because it seems to me that using computer adaptive tests instead of the current iterations of standardized tests wouldn’t really be all that big of a step forward. I guess on an individual level, CATs would probably be less stressful on students and might address test anxiety, maybe.
But in the end, what you have with a CAT is an approximation of a student’s proficiency in a subject,...

Separate Education for Those in Special Education?... →
One amendment offered by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., would have removed the requirement that teachers of students with disabilities be “highly qualified”.
…
Another proposal that died in the committee came from Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga. He wanted to do away with limits on how many students with disabilities could take alternate tests, which are different than those their classmates take.

So I have a friend and co-worker who is constantly asking me for materials I have made for my class. Generally, I don’t mind sharing resources—in fact, I think it is one of the most important things educators can do. Nobody has everything right and it is important to share our best things in order…
Haha no I do get that feeling. Like when I come up with activities and...

I’m not saying that my kids don’t need teachers. But I am saying my kids don’t (won’t) need teachers any more to get them to pass the test.

Franken Leads Charge to Reform 'No Child Left... →
Arguing the current standard for student assessment is a “perversity” that leads to a “race to the middle,” Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) successfully introduced an amendment that would better gauge student learning and knowledge. The proposal is part of the ongoing Senate debate over how to move the nation’s major education law of the land beyond No Child Left Behind.
His amendment, one of a...

States, Districts Move to Require Virtual Classes →
The state of Tennessee already mandated that all students take a class on personal finance, so Putnam County put its version online, complete with the district’s own online teachers.
More districts and a handful of states are starting to agree with this notion. They’re requiring students to get some form of online learning on their résumés before leaving high school.
But concerns remain...
